We love hummus at my house. I was thinking the other day how funny it is that I didn’t grow up eating it because it’s become such a staple for my entire family, I feel like it’s been part of my diet my whole life. We use hummus for dip, in place of mayo in wraps and sandwiches, on salads . . . the list is pretty endless. I make my own hummus a lot because buying a good-quality, organic one can get expensive, especially when you go through as much as this family of 5 does!
Basically you just need garbanzo beans (either made yourself or a no-salt added and BPA-free canned variety like Eden Foods), tahini, garlic and salt. From there, add in any seasonings that suit you love – cumin, cayenne, roasted red peppers, kalamata olives, etc. Just keep adding until you like the taste, you really can’t go wrong.
This is a recipe I made the other day. The lemon gives it a nice fresh flavor that’s perfect for summer.
Ingredients:
- 1 can Eden organic garbanzo beans, with liquid
- 1 garlic clove (or 2 if you really love garlic!)
- ¼ cup tahini
- 1 tsp sea salt
- Zest of 1 lemon
- Juice of 2 lemons
Add all ingredients to a high-speed blender or food processor and blend until smooth. Add more salt to taste.
What is your favorite kind of hummus?
