Today I sent cut-up cheese and crackers in my kids’ lunches. They LOVE putting foods together by themselves, and it reminds me of Lunchables.
Have you ever bought Lunchables or something similar for your kids? I have not, but I remember when they came out when I was a child, and I always wanted them. The concept is great – they make lunch so fun! But the nutrition is poor to say the least — like a lot of processed foods, they are way too high in saturated fat, salt and sugar.
Processed meats and cheeses are some of the worst foods to feed your kids. I know deli meat is everywhere and makes for a simple sandwich, but the excessive salt, fillers and chemicals can be truly dangerous for your health. If you do buy deli meat, make sure to do your research and buy an organic one without hormones, antibiotics, chemical nitrates or other artificial ingredients.
Try to be careful about the cheese you buy for your family as well. I make sure there are no hormones or antibiotics in the cheese my kids eat. Organic dairy is always best! It is more expensive, but believe me, your children’s health is worth it.
With the cheese and whole grain crackers my kids got today, I made a simple salad of cucumbers, halved cherry tomatoes, sliced black olives and edamame. Strange combination? Maybe. But I looked at what I had, thought about what my kids like, and this is what I ended up with.
The presentation may not look like Lunchables, but I’ll work on that:)
Snack today was strawberries and grapes.
I hope you are getting some good ideas for your children’s lunches and snacks! Let me know if you try any of these ideas!
