When you think of food rules, do you get a little nervous? I know I do!

Food is to be enjoyed, right?

And we all like to break the rules! 

For that reason I like to let myself eat intuitively without lots of rules! But I figured out that to actually do that without being driven by crazy cravings, I needed to drop the processed foods. When I stick to real food, I can eat without lots of ‘rules’ that become temptations to break.

Here are the three ‘rules’ I try not to break!

  1. If it has artificial colors, artificial flavors, or hydrogenated oils, it’s out. I really try to stick to this 99% of the time for my kids too. There is plenty of organic junk food out there with better ingredients when you really need it.
  2. If it has any ingredients I’m not sure of, it’s out. I have looked a few things up in the past when I was pretty committed to the food (ie. protein powder, sprouted grain English muffins), but that’s a pretty rare case. Ideally anything I buy that comes in a package could be replicated in my own kitchen if I had the time and desire (ex. Great Harvest bread, Larabars, organic corn tortilla chips).
  3. If it has multiple sugars, it’s out. I try to stick to very, very little sugar in my diet. The amount in a bit of dark chocolate is about it. When refined sugar is in my system, it’s impossible for me to make good choices. The cravings rule me and I can’t rely on my willpower. I’m weak.

To be honest, these may have started as ‘rules’ to get me on the right track. But now, this is just the way I eat. I don’t really think about it, I just choose accordingly, automatically. I couldn’t tell you the last time I had an Oreo, and I don’t want one. I would rather indulge in a delicious, real dessert that doesn’t taste artificial.

Getting to this point of feeling great is amazing!
