I have seen the recipes for puddings and other chocolate desserts made with avocado quite a few times, but I was skeptical.  I love avocados and chocolate, but I wasn’t sure they would go together.

The other night, Natalie asked for pudding.  I was going to make a chia seed pudding, but I had a bag of avocados on the counter that were ripe.  (That is the only downside of buying a bunch of avocados.  It might be cost-effective, but they all ripen at the same time and I have to get creative on how to use them up!)  So, I thought I would give a Chocolate Avocado Pudding a try.  I found some recipes that used sugar, so I swapped out the sugar for raw honey and used raw cacao in place of cocoa powder, because that is what I had on hand.

I was shocked by how delicious it turned out!  My kids all loved it and no one mentioned the avocado.  My husband loved this too – his only comment was that it was so rich that he couldn’t take more than a couple bites.  I’m not going to lie, I could definitely taste a hint of avocado, but it was still delicious and I will be making it again!

I made the recipe below and put it in 5 dishes, but none of us ate the whole thing in one sitting.  We all saved at least half for the next day.  So, I would guess this would make 4-6+ servings, depending on how much rich dessert you can handle!

Ingredients

  • 2 large avocados, peeled and pit removed
  • 1/2 cup raw cacao powder (or cocoa powder)
  • 1/2 cup raw organic honey
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened coconut milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla

Chocolate avocado pudding ingredients

A pinch of salt might be good here, to bring out the sweetness.

Add all ingredients to a food processor or blender and process until smooth.

Refrigerate until chilled, 30 minutes or so.
