Overwhelm is a real thing. We’re going 1000 miles per hour every day. Have you talked to anyone lately who wasn’t ‘really busy’?

We’ve got so much going on that we live in a constant state of high alert. You know the feeling… the tightness in your chest, the cartwheels going on in your stomach…

So what do we do to deal with this constant stress and overwhelmed feeling? We numb out, right? We reach for the junk food, pour some wine, get lost in reality TV or Facebook. Hey, I’m right there with you. I catch myself doing those things. But I strive to stay present, to use effective, simple tools to work through the overwhelm without checking out.

Here are 4 simple steps to get rid of overwhelm FAST:


  1. Brain Dump Have you ever tried this? It’s like a breath of fresh air. Take out a sheet of paper and write down everything that’s floating around in your head. All the to-do’s, all the reminders, all the stuff that’s distracting you. Once it’s out of your head, you free up some major brain space and lighten the mental load. Try it!
  2. Prioritize Now you’ve got this monster list from your brain dump. The next step is to categorize the list in a way that makes sense to you and makes the list manageable. I like to separate between work and family and then put a 1,2 or 3 next to each. 1 means I need to get it done asap. 2 means it can wait. 3 means someone else can do it. Honestly, things that are super important always get done! Seeing it on paper in front of me, realistically prioritized, immediately eases the overwhelm and I can get into action.
  3. Keep a notebook by your bed If you’re one of those people who wakes up in the middle of the night in a panic, or you wake up and can’t get back to sleep because your mind spins, jot down what you’re thinking about. Sign the permission slip, send in the payment, make the call.  Even if your handwriting is sloppy, getting it down on paper eases the tension and allows your nervous system to relax. You’ve got it down and you can trust that you’ll see it in the morning, no need to keep playing it out in your head!
  4. Use Balance Grounding Blend essential oil This blend of tree oils and florals calms the nervous system and lessens stress.
